Grooming

Coby has a soft wavy/ curly coat,he only sheds minimally as all dogs shed some amount

He is brushed every few days ,and his owners will brush him with a conditioning spray every couple of days. Coby will tolerate being brushed for a short while, but needs gently holding and a treat or 2. He's not a fan of his paws being brushed. He has his paws wiped after most walks (especially in the winter) and is fine with this. He often needs the sleepy dust wiping from his eyes, this can be tricky but relatively easy to do

He is professionally groomed every 7-8 weeks at a groomers and we bath him approx once a week. He is fine to have a bath and have the shower on him. He does go crazy afterwards to dry himself but not a lot of water comes off if he is well rubbed with a towel. He seems to absorb it all. We will brush him and use a conditioning spray and the hairdryer on him. Again not a huge fan but will tolerate it with gentle holding and treats

Exercise

Coby is taken on a minimum of 2 longer walks a day (30/40mins - an hour) and often a shorter 10 min one too. He also has the freedom of owners secure garden to roam in. At weekends they take him out for a longer run ,around at least once and he goes on a group dog walk to a park or secure field once a week to run free and socialise.

WE DO NOT ADVISE NEW OWNERS TO ALLOW COBY OFF LEAD ,UNTIL THERES COMPLETE TRUST IN HIS RECALL

Coby wears a long training lead when his owners take him to an enclosed park where we will let him run/ fetch with us. The lead stays on to make it easier to catch him just in case. He's still learning but improving well with training. On the group walk he now doesn't wear a lead and follows the crowd

His recall is still a work in progress depending on the distraction. He never goes far and is enticed with a high end treat like cheese/ham.

Coby May pull on his lead if he sees a cat/bird he'd like to meet, but generally he is now walking very well on the lead. His owners often have the lead doubled on his harness back and front which has helped with training him, but he is getting much better on a longer lead too.

He is a fast walker so you have to keep up!

Interaction with other dogs :- On walks and in parks he can be quite anxious. He is desperate to say hello and will go hesitantly up to a dog but will back off a bit before the inevitable bum sniffing takes place. If a dog comes to him he will back away but will recover quickly and say hello. He does go on a group walk once a week and has really settled well into that and the other dogs that go.

Coby’s training should be continued with his new owners please

His owners would have enrolled him in an agility class if we were keeping him - he is fast, agile and bouncy (they are sure he thinks he is a kangaroo!)

General Information

Coby’s temperament :- In general he is a pretty calm boy and is used to mooching around the house during the day while owners work at home.He is still very young though and does have a lot of energy at times. He likes to play still and will happily fetch a ball.He loves going for his walks and having a good sniff. He is a very affectionate boy and loves people. He often seeks his humans for a quick cuddle and reassurance and is very disracting! He is a truly wonderful dog.

Coby has never shown an aggressive side and has never bitten

His general obedience :- he is still very young and still learning, exploring the world. He does often come when called ,but can have adolescent selective hearing. He is very good at sit and stay and is (mostly) a really good boy.

He attended a 6 week puppy training class, but nothing since.

Coby loves all people. Again, sometimes he can be a little anxious and prefers the new person to be still so he can approach on his terms, but settles very quickly. He will bark if anyone comes to the door (or just passes the house) like the postman, but is not aggressive.

He is very well socialised He is taken out and about a lot. He goes on the school run regularly and lots of people are keen to pet him and he is happy to let them (adults and children). He has gone to cafes, bars and restaurants and his owners took him on holiday when he was 6 months old. He has also stayed with friends overnight and settles well.

Coby’s behaviour quirks :-

Coby sometimes takes things like socks/shoes which aren't his. He generally thinks it's a game not to give them back but can be persuaded with a treat and occasionally is a very good boy and drops it when asking. If you don't notice he has a shoe he can chew it quite badly but this isn't not as often as when he was younger, probably because we are better at putting them away! He usually only goes for the lady in the households and husbands shoes - rarely the childrens

Coby can be left a few hours in a day,but he prefers someone at home with him.

He does get upset when he knows owners are going out and will whine and jump at the stair gate which they have across back room (kitchen/family room) where we keep him.

He has the freedom to roam in here and his crate and water bowl and toys are in here. It is safe and dogproofed. He will generally settle after 5-10mins (not usually this long) and will then just lay down and doze and wait for owners to come home.

Diet :- Essential Foods. He was recently moved onto adult food (a gradual transition) and currently has their Superior Living small size kibble. They have many different mixes of meats and fish and the plan was to get a few different ones and change it up for him. Currently he wolfs it down though. They are a known fussy breed ,his owners will only add a minimum amount of something extra if he's not eating (eg some chicken/ cheese/ ham/ sausage) on top

He is currently on two meals per day

Treats he likes which are most things ,fish treats are a favourite, but anything with chicken mixed is also good. He likes a camel skin to chew, as well as a fluffy rabbit ear. He isn't very fussy at all!

He is toilet trained ,but we always state any dog may mark whilst getting settled into a new environment

Coby is crate trained ,he sleeps in his crate, downstairs in the family room. Owners trained him to do this and his crate goes with them everywhere and is his safe sleeping space.

Never caused any major destruction ,only the odd shoe and pinching socks which have not been popped away

Car travel :- Good whilst travelling most of the time. Owners use a car harness - sometimes on a rear seat and sometimes attached in the footwell at the front when the car is full (family of 5). He can complain and become anxious sometimes, but generally he is fine and never sick

Dislikes or scared of anything :- Coby can be anxious on meeting new dogs/ people and likes to make the first move. He has no problem with fireworks or loud bangs or noises.

Does he like water or to go swimming :- owners do not think he's ever swam in water. Generally he will paddle when on his group dog walks and is copying the others, but generally he will just want to drink it!

Favourite things to do and play with :- loves fetch with a ball ( new owners we advise ,limit ball playing please because of his joints) which involves a good run for him. At home he loves playing tug or fetch with any of his toys. He will bring them to you and ask you to grab them and pull so he can shake himself around with them.

Note from his loving owners :- He is just wonderful boy !

Not a bad bone in his body unless you count his extreme neediness for company and cuddles. Everyone who meets him loves him.

He will need a home where people are around most of the time like us -he just loves company and it would not be fair on him to be left alone

We have tried so hard to make this work but it wasn't meant to be.
